Throughout the last several weeks in ISTC I learned a lot about technology. Looking back on my very first blog post, my technobiography, I admitted that wasn’t very computer savvy, but I think I underestimated my technology skills. Throughout this class I expanded on the basic knowledge and skills that I had about computers and technology. I was familiar with the Excel and Powepoint programs so the spreadsheet project and the various PowerPoint projects were fairly. I had also made two other websites in the past. One for ISTC 301, using Inspiration, and the other website was for COSC 109 which required the use of Sharepoint. Since I had prior experience with the software and HTML, the website project refreshed my memory about how Sharepoint works. The real task that this class presented was the digital storytelling nightmare. It was by far my favorite project to do because it was the most fun and allowed for he most freedom, but it was definitely the hardest assignment of the semester. I would love to use the digital storytelling assignment in the future. I think assigning this kind of assignment for my future students would be a fun, nontraditional way for students to learn and personalize information within the content area. I will also use a lot of the other skills that I learned in this class to improve my career as a teacher. I will use Excel to create grade books so that I can track my students’ progress and grades electronically. I will give lectures using PowerPoint, and I will keep a website for my classroom where I can post assignments, reminders, and important information. It will also be a good way for students to contact me and ask questions on an open discussion board. Overall I thought this class was really fun and informative. I will take many important skills with me when I become a teacher.

Web 2.0. What?!

When I first read the questions for this blog I thought, “what the h*** is Web 2.0?!” Naturally I clicked the link and looked through a few pages of the Web 2.0 tools. On the 63 pages of Web 2.0 tools, I use a measly 2 (tools I mean, not pages). Facebook and Youtube. The next question that I’m supposed to answer is “how have they helped to make your life more efficient? (or less)”

Well, let me just tell you, the idea of social networking is a great idea in theory, if you aren’t a full time grad student. I can’t even begin to estimate the infinite number of hours that I have spent procrastinating/stalking on facebook instead of doing homework, writing a paper, or finishing a digital storytelling project . Facebook takes up a lot of my time, and when classes end on August 6th, I will be able to stalk my friends, guilt free, without the dark cloud of an approaching assignment over my head.

The other Web 2.0 tool that I frequent is youtube. In fact, I just used youtube to upload my AWESOME abc movie onto my even AWESOMER blog. See, youtube can be educational too! In all seriousness, youtube deserves a big round of applause. The fate of my digital storytelling project depended on youtube for the various clips that I borrowed. I love youtube because it is helpful in school (for classes like ISTC 501) and it is also a good source of entertainment. Have you ever seen the muffins video? It gets me every time!!

In my classroom I will absolutely use technology. Having a classroom website with a discussion board would be amazing. I would have the opportunity to post homework assignments or answer any questions that my students may have. That would be legit!

In 5-10 years I foresee technology being way over my head. At that point my students will be telling my what hip, new Web 2.0 tool has just surface. Just Kidding. In 5-10 years I think all students will have a laptop or some kind of electronic tablet in schools. Pens and paper will be obsolete. Technology in the classroom will be even more prevalent than it is now. As newer technology becomes available, the older stuff will become less expensive so schools will be able to afford better projectors (say goodbye to overheads!), better software, and better computers. Who knows, in 20 years they’ll probably have flying cars and teachers will be robots! Maybe I should start thinking about a back up plan…

Technobio and Classroom Tech

I think that my technobiography and my classroom technology experiences have had a significant impact on the way i view and use technology today. I remember when my parents brought home our family’s first word processor. I was amazing. I didn’t even know how to use a mouse and I remember asking my dad what the start bar was used for. Yeah, pretty bad. Now, I reflect on my life and how it has been completely transformed by this phenomenal thing called, technology. Not only do I use technology on a daily basis for leisure and pleasure, but now it’s also a necessary part of school and education. Papers are typed a double spaced, web sites are created and designed, projects are completed via PowerPoint and video camera. Now that technology, computers, internet, and cell phones have infiltrated my life, it is hard to remember what life was like before PowerPoint and Microsoft Word let alone Facebook and Blackberrys.

High Tech Heretic

I don’t necessarily agree with the quote, “You certainly can get an excellent education without a computer” (p. 32). I am a huge advocate for computers and technology in the classroom. I think online examples, images, and multimedia tools encourage and foster student learning. I think the quote’s main purpose is to state that while it is possible to get an excellent education without a computer, instruction is more successful and efficient with the use of technology as an aid. Some students can learn without a computer, but the majority of students would prefer and benefit from technology in the classroom. Young people today are so computer literate that technology wouldn’t present a barrier or hindrance for learning. Instead, computers would add elements of interest and excitement to daily instruction.

The second quote,“When every student… is pressed to become a computer maven, and only the incompetent are allowed to become plumbers, neither our programs nor our pipes will hold water” (p. 123), makes a profound statement about technology. It is important for everyone to have a complete understanding of computers and to be proficient in basic word processing skills. Technology benefits everyone and encourages professional growth; computer mavens and plumbers should all be computer competent. Computer skills and knowledge promotes advancement in school and in the work place. Today’s society places a large dependency on computers and technology, so using computers in school is necessary to produce well-rounded students and members of society.

Classroom Tech Use

Everyone remembers MTV Cribs. Whether they enjoyed the show or skipped right past it when surfing the channels, the show definitely had an impact on the entertainment world and in the classroom. That’s right, MTV cribs in school. In my high school Spanish class we had to make an episode of Cribs in Espanol. We worked in groups and video taped an episode then showed them to our classmates. We had the choice of using our own video cameras or renting them from the school’s media center. We gave a tour of one of my group member’s houses using the Spanish words we learned in class. I described the bano. This video was our final project. It showcased our knowledge and understanding of the language by applying it and using it in a real life situation. Not only was the project fun to do, but watching the final presentations in class was hilarious and educational. I think this is the best example of integrating technology in a classroom. The project used technology to foster and facilitate student learning, engagement, and active participation. MTV Cribs Espanol scored ratings through the roof in my high school Spanish class.
